Chapter 13 - Friend Relationships

 Cross-sex Friendships



I believe that cross-sex friendships can exist without romantic attraction, despite what some people may propose. Due to how a lot of people were raised, they have been taught to segregate themselves by sex, and believe that cross-sex relationships only exist as a vehicle for romantic attraction. In school, boys and girls may be separated into different classes for gym as well as family life. So naturally children would be more interested in being friends with members of the same sex. 

    "In many schools, young boys and girls are placed in separate gym classes, asked to line up separately       for class, and instructed to engage in competitions pitting 'the boys against the girls'" (Reflect & Relate,      p. 362)

    Personally, I have several female friends that are not at all attractive to me, simply because I only see them as friends, and nothing more, and believe that that is perfectly fine and natural. Some of my male friends believe that there is no way for a man to have a friendship with a woman with no ulterior motive, but I disagree entirely. I believe that having friendships with women is also valuable because they can give you relationship tips, among other things, which I find very valuable information.

 Action-Oriented Listening When I grew up I always spoke to people by relating what they said to said to myself. This is content-oriented. For example, they would say how they recently got into a car accident, and I would respond with a story about how I got into an accident before. I would mostly converse like that, and I never realized that I did that so often until we talked about it in class. Since that class, I have started listening and responding to conversations in different ways. One new way I started listening, was action oriented.      Now when I enter a conversation and where a friend is airing a frustration, I try to decide on an action to solve the problem. Chapter 14 - Relationships in the Workplace

Downward Communication I work as a lifeguard at an indoor pool, operating all year, and I am a head guard, meaning I am in charge of the shift, and I have to make sure that my coworkers are all doing their jobs safely and efficiently. I also have to make sure that all of our chores are completed by the end of the shift. A large part of my duties as head guard is instructing my subordinates on how they should conduct themselves. I will also regularly have to ask them to go monitor chemicals and do other chores like emptying the trash or sweeping the bleachers.       "Having formal authority in an organization gives you freedom in the messages you use when                        interacting with subordinates, known as downward communication."
